About the museum
RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire is best known as the former home of No. 617 Squadron, the Dambusters of the Second World War. The station was founded in 1916 as Brattleby, one of the first stations built to defend the country against Zeppelin airships and also used for flying training.
The heritage centre was housed in one of the original Second World War hangars. Entry was free, but visits had to be booked at least two weeks ahead so that security checks could be made, and visitor numbers were limited. Tours were led by station guides, and dates could change because of military operations and events.
The station closed in 2023 and its future is now being decided between possible new owners. Visitors report that the heritage centre is currently shut and that its reopening depends on the sale of the site.
