About the museum
The Rumble Museum at Cheney is a partnership between the educational charity the Iris Project, which promotes learning about the ancient world, and Cheney School in Headington. It is named after Jamie Rumble, a young man who devoted his life to improving the lives of young people. The museum has been awarded full accreditation under the Arts Council Museum Accreditation Scheme.
The collections are spread across the school site. The official collection of original artefacts is mostly kept in the school library and is arranged by theme, including war and weaponry, science and medicine, the history of Headington, trade and economy, design and technology, African artefacts, civil rights and women's suffrage. Objects range from ammonite fossils, Mesolithic tools and Roman and Greek items to modern objects such as an iPod. An exhibition area in the canteen explores the history of Cheney School, which dates back to about 1797, and further departmental collections are shown in corridors and classrooms. The art department has a Victorian printing press that is in regular use.
