About the museum
Scarlett Point lies just south of Castletown on the Isle of Man’s limestone coast. The Nature Discovery Centre stands between the old quarry that supplied limestone for Castletown’s buildings and the group of three lime-kilns on the shore, and it is run by the Manx Wildlife Trust with the help of volunteers.
Inside, maps, diagrams and data explain the geology and the fossils of the Scarlett peninsula, and a short film introduces the plants and birds of the coast. Fossil and animal remains from the area are shown, and a small shop is in the centre.
Outside, a marked nature trail crosses limestone pavements and volcanic rock, including the formation known as the Stack. Spring flowers such as spring squill and thrift bloom here, and in summer wheatears, stonechats and meadow pipits are often seen, while swallows and martins hunt over the disused quarry lake.
