About the museum
The Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group was formed in 1974 to preserve steam locomotion in Ayrshire. Its collection of industrial locomotives, mostly engines that once worked in the Doon Valley, was first displayed from 1980 as the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre at the former Minnivey Colliery near Dalmellington.
In 2002 the centre moved to the nearby Dunaskin Heritage Centre at the former Dunaskin Ironworks. After council funding for the heritage centre ended in 2005, the railway carried on with steam days using a borrowed locomotive, and regular steam days have run since 2008. The railway has since been reformed under the name Doon Valley Railway.
The collection includes standard gauge Andrew Barclay steam shunting engines, a fireless locomotive, diesel locomotives, and wagons and vans used on local industrial lines. Visitors can take short rides in a directors' saloon and see the collection, which the group describes as a living museum in Scotland's last authentic industrial railway setting. In 2026 steam trains are suspended because the locomotive No. 10 needs boiler repairs, so heritage diesel locomotives may run instead.
