About the museum
Site Gallery began in 1978, when a group of photographers formed South Yorkshire Photography Projects and opened the Untitled Gallery in a small shopfront on South Road in Walkley. Its early work focused on photography exhibitions, workshops and darkrooms.
In 1988 the gallery moved to its present home on Brown Street, as part of the development of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter. It was renamed Site Gallery in 1996, and its programme widened to include moving image, new media, performance and experimental practice.
In 2018 the gallery extended into a former film studio next door. The extension added exhibition and event spaces, a café and a shop. Today Site Gallery is a contemporary art gallery that specialises in moving image, new media and performance, and is run as a registered charity. Alongside its exhibitions it offers hire of two event spaces: a ground-floor black-box studio and a top-floor studio with panoramic views.
