About the museum
The Smith Art Gallery was built by Alderman William Smith, who gave it and his collection of artworks to the people of Brighouse in 1907. The building was designed as an art gallery and public library, and it is known as The Rydings. It stands in a park with gardens on Halifax Road.
The front gallery shows oil paintings on the theme of people and places, including works by Atkinson Grimshaw, Marcus Stone and Thomas Sydney Cooper. The rear gallery has changing displays by local artists and touring exhibitions, covering photography, mixed media and sculpture.
The gallery is part of Calderdale Museums, which also runs Shibden Hall and Bankfield Museum. It is one of the venues in the free Bloomberg Connects app, which gives digital access to works on display and further highlights from the collection.
