About the museum
The Somerset Cricket Museum was set up in 1985 as the successor to the supporters' association of Somerset County Cricket Club. After extensive renovation of its building next to the county ground in Taunton, it opened to visitors in 1989. The charity that runs it is separate from the cricket club, although there is no physical barrier between the ground and the museum.
The museum looks after objects, photographs, scorecards, match programmes, films and recordings that tell the story of cricket in Somerset, including the men's and women's game, the county's captains and its first-class records. Visitors can use floor plans and a quiz to find their way around the displays, and a printable scavenger hunt for school holidays is available online.
The charity owns two buildings. The second one houses the Eddie Lawrence Library, offices and storage behind the museum barn. Much of the collection can also be explored online through a digital museum with featured collections, video and audio recordings, scorecards and an archive search, and a virtual tour. The museum is run by a small team of volunteers and relies on donations and membership. Because it stands beside the playing area, opening hours follow the cricket fixtures: in the season the museum opens during the intervals of county matches, and outside the season it opens by appointment.
