About the museum

Stokesay Court was built between 1889 and 1892 on the Aldon estate by John Derby-Allcroft, a glove manufacturer, philanthropist and MP. The architect was Thomas Harris and the gardens were laid out by Henry Ernest Milner. It was one of the first houses in England with integral electric lighting, installed in 1891. The Pevsner architectural guide judged it the grandest Victorian mansion in Shropshire, and it is listed Grade II*.

The house passed down the family through marriage. Herbert Allcroft inherited it in 1900, and after his death his widow Margaret ran it until 1946. In 1915 the house became a convalescent home for wounded soldiers, with Margaret Allcroft as commandant; the hospital archive includes around 300 letters and official records. In the Second World War the army requisitioned it as a training school. Margaret's daughter Jewell later lived there with her husband Philip Magnus until her death in 1992.

The contents were sold at Sotheby's in 1994. Jewell's niece Caroline Magnus has spent about 30 years repairing and refurnishing the house, which appeared as Tallis House in the film Atonement. In the past it has opened for house tours and events, and it is hired out for filming, photo shoots and private events. No house tours are planned in 2026 while the custodian hands the house over to the next generation.
