About the museum
Stone Science opened in 1989 close to the east coast of Anglesey and is a privately owned, family-run museum. The exhibits come from the personal collection of its owner, a geologist, who also curates the displays.
The galleries cover about 650 million years of Earth history on two large floors. The museum describes its fossil collection as one of the largest in Wales, with fossil fish from Lebanon, rocks from Anglesey, thousands of minerals and crystals, and Native American arrowheads and weapons. Dioramas explain how life on Earth evolved and how the dinosaurs rose and died out, and life-size reconstructions of parts of dinosaurs add to the story.
Many items can be touched, including a dinosaur egg, teeth and fossilised dung, and videos for children and adults explain the exhibits. Staff are on hand to answer questions. The eastern coast of Anglesey is rich in fossils, so many visitors combine the museum with a fossil-hunting trip to a nearby beach. A shop on site sells fossils, minerals, crystals, jewellery, models and books on the geology of Anglesey.
