About the museum
Stranraer Museum is housed in the Old Town Hall on George Street, a building dating from 1776. The museum is run by Dumfries and Galloway Council as part of its DG Culture venues and presents the history of Wigtownshire and its people.
The displays have been renewed with new interpretation, audiovisual stations and trails for children. Visitors can learn about Wigtownshire during the Second World War and about the story of the bodies found in the floor of the building, and a range of historic objects from the area is on show. School bookings are welcome.
The museum also shows changing exhibitions. At the time of research a free photography exhibition by Iain Stewart, The Killing Time, was on show; it deals with the Galloway landscape and the Covenanters and Solway Martyrs. The first floor is currently closed, so the visit is limited to the ground floor.
