About the museum
Surrey Heath Museum began on 10 September 1935, when George Poulter was appointed its first honorary curator. It was first called Camberley Museum and started in two small rooms in the former council offices on London Road. Its early collections came from Poulter’s own items and a bequest from a local bootmaker.
The museum moved several times. In the late 1960s it used a Victorian house off Knoll Road, and in the 1970s and 1980s a former shop on London Road. In 1987 it opened within Surrey Heath House, and it took its present name in the 1980s. In June 2018 the displays moved to a unit in the Camberley shopping centre on Obelisk Way, while many collections remained at Surrey Heath House.
The museum holds more than 30,000 items, most of them donated by local residents. It shows the local history of Surrey Heath and has a changing exhibition area for artists, craftspeople, societies and heritage collections. It also runs events, talks and workshops for all ages.
