About the museum

Taigh Chearsabhagh is a museum and arts centre in Lochmaddy, North Uist. The building was put up in 1741 by the merchant Neil MacLean and was first used as a travellers' inn. It was one of the first buildings on North Uist with a slated roof and is the oldest building in the village. Lochmaddy's post office was based there from 1802, and the post office still operates from the building today.

In the early twentieth century the house became a private home and later a workshop for the North Uist Estate. By the early 1990s it was a derelict shell. In 1993 the Uist Arts Association and the North Uist Historical Society (CEUT) formed the Taigh Chearsabhagh Trust to turn it into an arts centre. It was restored and extended in the 1990s, with the first opening in 1995 and the current centre opening in 2001.

Today the centre combines a museum, two galleries, a shop, a café and a post office, and offers a print workshop, a darkroom and an art school. The museum draws on the community collection held by the North Uist Historical Society: more than 1,000 objects from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries and thousands of photographs that show everyday life on the island.
