About the museum

Tain & District Museum opened in 1966 to mark the 900th anniversary of Tain's royal charter. Rosemary Mackenzie, who was asked to organise an exhibition of local material for the celebration, became its first curator. She had long collected items of local interest, and the museum was founded partly so that valuable material would stay in Tain after the local government reorganisation of 1975.

The collection was first held in what had been the caretaker's cottage of the old collegiate church, built in the 1880s. It stands in the churchyard of St Duthac's collegiate church and is now part of the Tain Through Time visitor attraction. The museum is independent and run by volunteers, serving the area of Easter Ross.

The collection includes objects, photographs and archives of local and regional importance, a fragment of the Nigg Stone and other Pictish material, and silver made in Tain in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum also holds a papal bull of 1492. The Clan Ross Centre covers the heritage and genealogy of the clan, and the museum also keeps online collections and records of local war memorials.
