About the museum
The Heritage & Visitor Centre stands at 100 Church Street in the middle of Tewkesbury, in a restored 17th-century building. Its self-guided exhibition tells the story of the town from its earliest settlers, through the Wars of the Roses and the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, to the Civil War and the effects of the industrial revolution on the town's trade.
Information panels follow the story of Bartholomew Read, a former owner of the house, and visitors can use portable guides and interactive games as they go round. The centre is also home to the Tewkesbury Stitch Story, a six-metre hand embroidery to which more than 8,000 people from schools, care homes, clubs and markets each added a stitch.
The building is also the town's tourist information centre. Staff give advice on places to stay, local attractions, public transport and events, and the centre sells maps, guides, local produce and gifts.
