About the museum
The Bubblecar Museum presents itself as the only public museum in the UK devoted to microcars, meaning cars with engines of less than 700cc. These small, fuel-efficient vehicles appeared in the early 1950s, a time of post-war austerity and worries about oil supplies, and many small manufacturers built them in Britain and on the continent.
The museum shows more than 50 microcars, with makes such as Bond, Isetta, Reliant, Frisky, Berkeley, Messerschmitt, Heinkel and the single-seater Bamby built in Hull in the early 1980s. Many are arranged in period scenes, and a row of recreated shops displays 1950s memorabilia including Bakelite and china. A mezzanine holds technical, advertising and press archives.
The collection is housed at Clover Farm in Langrick near Boston, Lincolnshire, where there is also a café, a gift shop and a rally field and campsite. Visitors can book short rides in a bubblecar on set weekends, and vehicles shown on the website may not always be on display.
