About the museum
The Naughton Gallery was founded in 2001 and is named after its benefactors, Martin and Carmel Naughton. It is in the Lanyon Building at the centre of Queen's University Belfast and was first set up to show the university's art collection.
The university collection dates back to the foundation of Queen's College in 1845 and now holds more than 1,000 objects, including paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, furniture and silver. Most of it is displayed around the university grounds rather than in the gallery itself, for example more than fifty portraits in the Lanyon Building's Great Hall.
Since the core programme was relaunched in 2016, the gallery itself has mainly shown solo and group exhibitions by local and international artists, together with borrowed historical works, with talks, screenings and workshops alongside. Exhibitions usually change every few weeks. A series of sport-themed shows began in 2017, and the gallery has won awards for innovation in the arts and in the student experience.
