About the museum
Storrington and District Museum opened in April 2000 to mark the new millennium. It serves Storrington and surrounding villages such as Amberley, Parham and West Chiltington, and is run entirely by volunteers who rely on fundraising, membership and donations.
It is housed in the Old School in School Lane, opposite St Mary’s Parish Church. The stone building was put up in 1868, extended in 1875 and used as a school until 1964, and is still owned by the Hooper Downer Trust.
The collections cover local archaeology, church items, domestic life, local people and the two world wars. Notable holdings include material from the Greenfield family’s village shop, items about the Flower Fairies illustrator Cicely Mary Barker, who lived in Storrington, pottery by Reginald Fairfax Wells and a monthly changing display cabinet. The museum also keeps a local history library, a photographic archive and records, and runs talks, walks and a schools programme.
