About the museum
Tutbury Museum is housed in the Old Soup Kitchen, on the ground floor of Charity House in Duke Street, in the centre of the village. The building dates from 1844 and was the office of the trustees of the Tutbury Parish Charities; it was known locally as the Soup House. The museum opened in 1988 and grew out of objects, photographs and documents collected by a local man, Aubrey Bailey, who was given permission by the trustees to show his collection there.
The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers. Its collection includes old maps, documents, photographs and artefacts from the area, and a large archive of photographs of village life since the early days of photography, most of them scanned and searchable by subject. For family historians it holds transcribed parish registers from 1668 to 1965, census returns and other records. Volunteers answer online enquiries about local and family history even when the museum is closed.
In 2023 the museum published a 30-page illustrated guidebook to the historic village of Tutbury. The museum rooms are very small, and the museum closes for the winter and reopens in the spring.
