About the museum
The Twickenham Museum is a community museum at 25 The Embankment, in the oldest part of Twickenham beside the River Thames and next to the parish church of St Mary the Virgin. It is housed in a house of about 1720 that is listed Grade II and stands on the local history trail from Richmond Bridge to Twickenham.
The present museum grew out of local society discussions in the late twentieth century and became a registered charity in 1993. It follows earlier attempts to give the town a museum, among them a volunteer-run technical museum opened by Thomas Twining in 1860 that burned down in 1871, and a small council museum at York House that was open from 1924 to 1939.
The museum collects, researches and shows archives, objects and information about Twickenham, Whitton, Teddington and the Hamptons, the villages that once made up the borough. Its displays are organised around people, places and social history. Themes include notable residents grouped by occupation, the individual villages, and subjects such as work, public houses, shopping streets, sport and lost houses.
The museum is run largely by volunteers and aims to keep admission free for everyone. It also provides learning pages for children, families and schools.
