About the museum
UCL Art Museum began as a teaching and research collection linked to the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. Because the Slade was the first art school to admit women, many works by women artists entered the collection through its prize system from the 1890s onwards, and about 45 per cent of the Slade Collections are by women.
Today the museum holds more than 10,000 works in many media. They include prints by Albrecht Durer, Van Dyck portraits from his Iconographia series, annotated landscape prints by Turner, and teaching drawings by artists such as John Flaxman, Henry Tonks and William Coldstream. Many pieces show stages of the creative process and the history of art education in Britain.
The collection is shown through exhibitions and displays across the UCL campus. Under the dome of the UCL library stands the Flaxman Gallery, which presents John Flaxman’s plaster models. Public displays are now held in the Prints & Drawings Room in the South Wing, and exhibitions are developed with UCL academics.
