About the museum

Ugbrooke has a history of about 900 years, and the estate appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. It remains the private home of the Clifford family. The 4th Lord Clifford commissioned the remodelling of the house in the middle of the eighteenth century by Robert Adam, and it is one of the earliest examples of his “toy fort” style. The parkland of about 3,000 acres was laid out by Capability Brown.

During the Second World War the house was requisitioned as a school, then served as a refuge for the Polish Army, and afterwards was used as a grain store. The 13th Lord and Lady Clifford rescued and restored it in 1957. St Cyprian’s Chapel was rededicated as a Catholic chapel in 1673, when the 1st Lord Clifford converted to Catholicism, and is claimed to be the oldest Catholic parish church in the south west of England.

The house contains fine paintings, furniture, needlework and ceramics, and its tours tell stories of the Clifford family’s part in national war, politics and religion. The grounds and the Orangery are part of the visit, and the house is also hired for private events, corporate retreats and filming.
