About the museum
Usk Rural Life Museum is a registered charity that is run entirely by volunteers. Local enthusiasts gathered its collection of more than 5,000 objects over roughly fifty years, and the museum now shows how country people in Monmouthshire lived and worked between about 1850 and 1950.
The displays are housed in a 16th-century malt barn and the buildings next to it in the centre of Usk. The collection ranges from small hand tools and household items to large farm machinery and vintage tractors.
Several rooms are set out as period scenes, including a Victorian cottage, a forge, a cobbler, a cheese-making display, a stable and a hardware shop. A Second World War display looks at how the war affected a rural community. The site also contains the Usk Visitor Centre, a café and a community room that can be hired.
