About the museum
Verulamium Museum stands on the site of the forum of the walled Roman city of Verulamium, next to Verulamium Park in St Albans. The museum tells the story of the Iron Age and Roman periods in and around the city. It grew out of the large excavations led by Mortimer and Tessa Wheeler in the 1930s.
The museum was extended in 1996 and 1997, and archaeologists excavated the site during the building work. Its collections show everyday life in Roman Britain, with finds from the city and several mosaics. A reconstructed inscription from the Verulamium forum is one of its best-known objects.
The museum is run by St Albans Museums, part of St Albans City and District Council, and is an accredited museum. The Roman hypocaust, a separate building in Verulamium Park with an in-situ mosaic, can be visited free of charge in the same area.
