About the museum
The Victoria Jubilee Museum in the village of Cawthorne was built to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and is generally said to have opened in 1889, although some directories give 1884 as its date. It is a small independent museum run by volunteers.
The collection is a mixture of unusual objects. It includes a stuffed cheetah, a two-headed lamb and a two-headed calf, and a crocodile skin that once hung in Barnsley’s civic museum. Part of the natural history material is reported to come from a Barnsley collection that closed in the 1950s. A Jubilee stone dated 1897 stands in the grounds on Taylor Hill.
