About the museum
The Smiddy Museum is the restored village smithy of St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay. The forge has been turned into a small museum that shows the tools and equipment a blacksmith used in his work, with horse harnesses hanging from the walls and machinery from the past century on the floor. There is also a collection of horse-drawn farm implements and other items made in the smithy.
Alongside the objects, the museum keeps an archive of photographs and papers about local events and island life, which is useful for researching local history and family history. The museum is looked after by South Ronaldsay and Burray Community Council with the help of volunteers, and its opening depends on their availability.
