About the museum

The Wellesbourne Wartime Museum is run by volunteers of the Wellesbourne Aviation Group and tells the story of Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield. During the Second World War the airfield was the home of No. 22 Operational Training Unit, which trained Bomber Command crews, many of them from Commonwealth countries, on Vickers Wellington and Avro Anson aircraft.

The museum stands at the end of the car park near the airfield control tower. It includes part of the wartime underground battle headquarters, a bunker where control tower staff could take shelter during an air raid, which volunteers have worked to restore for visitors.

Alongside displays on the airfield and its wartime units, the museum shows several aircraft and cockpit sections, including a Percival Provost, a de Havilland Vampire and the cockpit of a Sea Vixen, and an engine recovered from the crash site of an Avro Lancaster. The Avro Vulcan XM655 elsewhere on the airfield is run by a separate society.
