About the museum
Weymouth Museum was founded in 1972 as the Weymouth Museum of Local History in the former Melcombe Regis Boys' School on Westham Road. In 1989 it had to leave that site, which was planned for redevelopment, and in 1990 it opened in Brewers Quay, a former brewery building near Weymouth harbour.
Brewers Quay is now being redeveloped, and the museum building there is closed. While the work goes on, the Weymouth Museum Trust, the volunteer-run charity that looks after the collection, rents a shop unit at 39b St Thomas Street as a pop-up museum. It shows changing displays, keeps a local history archive and invites the public to contribute to plans for the future museum.
The collection covers Weymouth's history from medieval times to the present, with particular strength in Georgian and Victorian material, and it includes a good art collection and photographs from the 1880s onwards. More than 20,000 items are conserved and catalogued by volunteers in store. The museum has no paid staff.
