About the museum
The Wilson Ancestral Home stands at Dergalt, in the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains near Strabane, County Tyrone. It is the house that James Wilson left in 1807 when, aged about twenty, he emigrated to Philadelphia. His grandson Woodrow Wilson later became the 28th President of the United States.
The house is a small whitewashed farmhouse of a type typical of Ulster emigrants' homes. A heritage listing dates the building to between 1800 and 1819 and also covers its outbuildings, including a pig house, a fowl house and a cart house. The state bought the property in the early 1960s, and it is now managed by National Museums NI through the Ulster American Folk Park.
According to the Visit Derry tourism site, the house is currently closed to visitors. Visitors are asked to contact the Ulster American Folk Park for access. The exterior of the site is publicly accessible and has outdoor interpretation, and the house is reached by a narrow lane with car parking at its foot.
