About the museum
Wivenhoe Chapel Museum is a small local museum in the cemetery chapel at the town’s New Cemetery, between Belle Vue Road and Stanley Road. The chapel was more than a hundred years old and was little used because fewer funerals were being held there, so Wivenhoe Town Council converted it into a museum for the town in a project costing about £3,000. The museum was officially opened on 14 May 2015 by the Town Mayor.
It is run by Wivenhoe Town Council with volunteers, who staff it on summer weekends. The displays show objects, pictures, maps and memorabilia from Wivenhoe’s past, including an eighteenth-century clock that Captain Mathew Martin gave to St Mary’s Church, finds from the Iron Age and Bronze Age found locally, old photographs of the town and models. Pictures from the Wivenhoe History Group’s digitised collection of John Stewart’s Memories are also shown.
