About the museum
World of Country Life is a family-owned visitor attraction at Sandy Bay on the outskirts of Exmouth. The park first opened in 1978 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018. It has grown over the years into a mixture of museums, animals, play areas and entertainment, both outdoors and under cover.
The Exhibition Hall is a museum of rural life and farming. It shows a large collection of farm and agricultural machinery, some of it demonstrated in operation, covering farming technology from the Victorian period to modern times. Visitors can also walk along a recreated Victorian street with a dress shop, a gamekeeper’s cottage, an ironmonger’s, a dairy and a pub. The hall has featured on the BBC’s The One Show and on Salvage Hunters.
The Hall of Transport holds more than 40 vehicles, including steam engines, vintage cars and the motorcycle collection of Reg Imray, a Second World War veteran who owned 168 vehicles from 1941 and won over 200 trophies. Some vehicles have appeared in television dramas such as Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge and Parade’s End. Around the museum halls the park offers animals to interact with, a daily programme of activities and indoor and outdoor play areas.
