About the museum
The Young Gallery is named after the watercolourist Edwin Young, whose collection of more than 300 watercolours of Salisbury and the surrounding area formed its core. The name frieze of the original gallery was commissioned in 1913, and it moved to the new Salisbury Library in 1975, where the gallery occupies the first floor.
In the 1970s the gallery also acquired about 2,000 books in more than 20 languages, together with manuscripts, book-jacket designs and other material linked to the crime and thriller writer John Creasey. Over time the collection grew to more than 4,000 objects, including paintings, prints, sculpture, books and photographs.
In 2024 the two charitable trusts that supported the gallery, the Edwin Young Collection and the John Creasey Museum, merged into the Young & Creasey Gallery Trust. The merger was meant to help the gallery renew its accreditation with Arts Council England and to build a sustainable art museum for the future, with more of its collection on display and collaborations with local artists. Exhibitions are free to visit.
