Over het museum

The impetus for the museum came from the writer Johannes Buchholtz, who in 1929 applied to the town council for funds for an archaeological and historical collection and asked the population to donate objects. On July 3, 1930, the museum opened in the old farm Torngaard, the oldest house in the town. After the death of Olga Buchholtz in 1957, the neighboring villa of the author couple was added, which Buchholtz had designed himself in 1911 and which is preserved to this day as an almost unchanged artists' home of the 1920s and 1930s.

In the 1970s the buildings were renovated, at the end of the decade the museum received full-time management for the first time, and in 1984 state recognition followed. Between 2006 and 2008 the museum was fundamentally rebuilt and extended; the most striking element since then has been a largely underground pyramid with two exhibition levels, which was inaugurated in 2008.

As a state-recognized cultural history museum, Struer Museum is responsible for the more recent history of Struer Municipality. Since 2022 it has sharpened its profile on sound and hearing and houses the national knowledge center for sonic cultural heritage (SOKU). The centerpiece is the exhibition on Bang & Olufsen, whose history is closely tied to the region; in addition, the museum shows an interactive sound universe, the exhibition BLÅ around a Bronze Age glass bead find from Humlum, as well as outlying sites such as a historic general store and the lookout tower at Oddesund.
