Over het museum
The corner building at Altstadtstraße and Fleischgasse is one of the oldest half-timbered buildings in Eppingen. Its stone base dates from the first half of the 15th century; according to dendrochronological analysis, the timbers of the half-timbered upper structure were felled in 1494/95. On the first floor, oak pillars support a three-aisled hall, and the facade features Gothic pointed-arch windows.
The house owes its name to Heidelberg University: when the plague raged there in 1564, the university moved to Eppingen in October and occupied rooms on the upper floors. In the spring of 1565 the epidemic reached Eppingen as well, and the students returned to Heidelberg.
From 1955 the owner at the time provided rooms for a local history museum, which was given more space in 1959. After the town had acquired the entire building by 1973, the museum expanded across all floors. Today the Stadt- und Fachwerkmuseum (town and half-timbering museum) covers more than 800 square meters with prehistory and early history, the development of the town, the evolution from early timber construction to half-timbering with the “Eppinger Linien” (Eppingen Lines), pre-industrial living and working, flight and expulsion, and local crafts. A donated collection of half-timbering models prompted the redesign of the half-timbering department.
About four special exhibitions a year are devoted to contemporary art and regional history, including the summer artists' flag festival on Altstadtstraße. The museum also has several branch sites in Eppingen and its districts, such as the Bauernmuseum Richen.
