Raußmühle
Baroque mill farmstead near Eppingen with preserved milling machinery and a private collection on rural everyday life – visits by guided tour only.
Over het museum
The Raußmühle in the Elsenz valley southwest of Eppingen was first mentioned in 1334; its name goes back to a miller named Heinrich Ruthard, whose name evolved via "Rus" into "Rauß". For centuries, families of millers lived here, some of whom also made their mark in Eppingen as mayors, postmasters or innkeepers. The mill always remained in private ownership.
The complex acquired its present Baroque appearance in 1765 under the merchant Christoph Weigand, though the foundation walls are older. The farmstead is laid out on three sides around a cobbled courtyard whose paths, wheel ruts and water channels still reveal its former use. Besides grinding grain, the mill at times also served as a gypsum stamp mill and a hemp mill. Milling ceased in 1958, after which the property fell into disrepair and was at times used as a scrapyard.
In 1976 the painter and antiques dealer Frank G. Dähling bought the mill and restored it over decades with the help of many volunteers; in 1996 the ensemble was honored as part of Europe's cultural heritage. Dähling assembled an extensive folk-life collection – from craftsmen's workshops to mousetraps and flour sacks to a late medieval smoke kitchen – which is displayed largely without glass cases. Since 2009 the friends' association Förderverein Raußmühle e.V. has supported the preservation and running of the museum; in 2024 it built a new waterwheel. Since Dähling's death in 2025, the association has continued the work.
