Over het museum

Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel chose Buckow in the Märkische Schweiz region as their summer residence in 1952. Until 1971, Weigel lived in the so-called Iron Villa, a studio house built in 1911 for the Berlin sculptor Georg Roch; Brecht worked in the nearby gardener's house and wrote the "Buckower Elegien" (Buckow Elegies) here in 1953/54. He spent his last summer weeks before his death in 1956 in Buckow.

After Weigel's death, the heirs sold the middle part of the property to the state, and a memorial opened there in June 1977. The gardener's house is privately owned today. The villa and garden have been listed as protected monuments since 1986; sculptures by Roch still adorn the facade and garden.

The ensemble also includes the theater shed, renovated in 2014, with the covered wagon from the Berlin production of "Mother Courage and Her Children," and a visitor center opened in 2023 that hosts special exhibitions. The operator is the district of Märkisch-Oderland; the house also has a reference library of more than 900 volumes.
