Fledermaus-Museum Julianenhof
NABU museum in an old manor stable in the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park about native bats, with a maternity roost under the roof and an ice cellar.
Over het museum
The museum is located in Julianenhof near Reichenberg in the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park. It uses a stable building of a former manor farm that was built in the mid-19th century in the mix of fieldstone and brick typical of the Mark. After reunification, the former agricultural cooperative (LPG) site passed to the BVVG, before the NABU regional association Strausberg-Märkische Schweiz acquired it in 1998 with funding.
The aim was to permanently secure the roosts of the bats living here and at the same time to create a place of learning. From 1999 an old ice cellar was rebuilt, the stable restored and the roof structure prepared so that the nationally significant maternity roost of the Brandt's bat was preserved. The museum opened in 2006. In the following years a bat garden, a camera feed from the maternity roost, a nature-oriented outdoor area as well as the converted cow barn and a restored barn were added.
Twelve bat species have been recorded in the buildings. Exhibitions on the lifestyle and protection of the animals, a collection of bat boxes and holiday activities for children characterized the volunteer-run operation; in 2024 an exhibition section on forest bats and a redesigned garden were added. At the end of August 2026 the association ended the season early, and since then the museum has been closed until further notice.
