Over het museum

The museum grew out of an initiative by radio enthusiasts: in 1978, a group of CB radio operators was looking for club premises and proposed a collection of historic radio and television sets as the reason for them. On September 12, 1978, the Bremer Rundfunkmuseum opened in a building of the old slaughterhouse on the Bürgerweide; in 1980 it was added to the museum directories, and in 1987 the supporting association was recognized as a nonprofit.

The collection grew steadily through donations. In 1996, the studio equipment of the Comedian Harmonists came to the museum, and in 2000 the elaborately veneered Blaupunkt radiogram cabinet from the household of Bremen carmaker Carl Borgward, donated by his widow. That same year, the museum had to leave the slaughterhouse and moved to Findorffstraße, where around 700 of more than 3,000 objects have since been on display across about 400 square meters.

In 2013, an original Radio Bremen announcer's studio from the 1950s was installed, along with early reporting and broadcasting equipment; in 2016 a reading and teaching room with a specialist library followed, where visitors can also build receiver circuits themselves. The most recent addition is an exhibition on the Bremen manufacturer Nordmende. The museum is run by volunteers of the association Bremer Rundfunkmuseum e.V. and, besides guided tours, offers radio play evenings, equipment swap meets and a repair service for old devices.
