Deutsches Kleingärtnermuseum
The only museum on the history of allotment gardening – in the clubhouse of the first Schreber garden association in Leipzig, with three historic demonstration gardens.
Over het museum
The museum is located at a key site of the allotment garden movement: the garden colony on Aachener Straße on the edge of Leipzig's city center was home to the first Schreberverein (Schreber garden association), founded in 1864 and today the allotment association Kleingärtnerverein "Dr. Schreber". Its clubhouse from 1896 is a listed building, like the entire colony; the exhibition occupies the upper floor, and the building also houses a restaurant with a beer garden.
The project was initiated by a friends' association founded in 1992, which still runs the museum today. After the building was renovated in 1992 and 1993, the Deutsches Kleingärtnermuseum (German Allotment Garden Museum) opened in August 1996 on the occasion of an international allotment gardeners' congress. The federal government, the Free State of Saxony and the City of Leipzig contributed to the funding, as did allotment gardeners and associations from all over Germany with donations.
The permanent exhibition traces more than 200 years of allotment garden history, from its various roots to the present day, and examines their social, ecological and cultural significance. On display are documents, photographs, club banners, medals and trophies, models of garden colonies and old gardening tools; changing small-scale exhibitions explore individual topics in depth. An archive, library and photo archive complement the collection.
Outdoors there are three demonstration gardens: an arbor garden with four historic garden sheds, a museum garden re-creating an allotment from around 1900, and a garden showing gardening under the GDR allotment gardeners' association VKSK. In the "EntdeckerGarten" (discovery garden), the museum offers environmental education, children's tours and workshops.

The exhibition is on the upper floor of the listed clubhouse, which has no elevator; the restrooms are also upstairs. The demonstration gardens can be reached by wheelchair via firm sand paths: the museum garden is accessible, the GDR garden has two low steps (approx. 6 cm), and the arbor garden has a soft, uneven wood-chip path. On request, tours can be held entirely outdoors with supplementary material on the exhibition. The "EntdeckerGarten" is step-free, with tables wheelchair users can roll under and a wheelchair-accessible composting toilet.
