Deutsches Maler- und Lackierermuseum
Museum on the history of the painting and varnishing trade, housed in the Billwerder Glockenhaus (c. 1600) and a thatched barn from 1649.
Over het museum
In May 1981, members of the Maler- und Lackierer-Innung Hamburg (Hamburg Painters' and Varnishers' Guild), at the suggestion of their guild master Joachim Germann, decided to found a museum of their own. This followed many years of collaboration with Hamburg museums and the State Archives. Because the collection on guilds, painters' companies, and trade associations grew quickly, the planned Hamburg museum became a German museum, with the approval of the federal association of the painting and varnishing trade. It opened on May 18, 1984.
Hamburg's culture authority provided the Billwerder Glockenhaus for the purpose, a country house built around 1600 that owes its name to its roof turret with a bell. Wealthy Hamburg owners gradually expanded the former farmstead, most recently in the late 18th century in the Neoclassical style. After the house was placed under heritage protection in 1972, it was restored; in the process a Baroque ceiling painting from around 1630 came to light, and the historical wall finishes were reconstructed based on the findings.
In the main house, documents, banners, guild objects, and journeyman's and master craftsman's certificates tell the roughly 800-year history of the profession; the upper floor focuses on interior design as well as lettering, reverse glass painting, and trompe-l'oeil painting. Since 2002, the threshing barn opposite – a thatched barn from 1649 originally from Kirchwerder – has displayed workshops, paint mills, and wallpaper and stenciling techniques. There is also a carriage shed with transport carts and a Baroque garden laid out after historical models. The museum is supported by a friends' association; in 2019 it received the Dr. Murjahn-Förderpreis.
