FAIL – Scheitern in Wissenschaft und Technik

Announced special exhibition with FAU's Zentrum für Wissenschaftsreflexion (Center for Reflection on Science) on the role failure plays in research and innovation.

Over het museum

The idea for a Nuremberg branch of the Deutsches Museum arose in 2014 as part of the Bavarian state government's initiative for northern Bavaria. In 2016 a new building on the site of the former Augustinerhof on the Pegnitz River was chosen; the foundation stone was laid in 2018, and the museum took over the premises at the end of 2019. The museum opened on September 17, 2021, under the direction of Marion Grether. The choice of location, the lease, and the financing later became the subject of an inquiry committee of the Bavarian state parliament, which presented its report in 2023.

Unlike the main museum in Munich, this museum of the future looks not back but forward. Spread over around 2,900 square meters, more than 250 exhibits from research and industry are organized into five themes: Work and Everyday Life, Body and Mind, System City, System Earth, and Space and Time. Alongside prototypes such as an air taxi or the talking humanoid robot Ameca, there are film scenes, hands-on stations, a visitor lab, and XR experiences; one of the few classic museum pieces is a Soviet Foton space capsule from 1985.

The museum sees itself as a place for discussion: it examines the opportunities, risks, and ethical consequences of new technology and involves universities in the region in its changing special exhibitions. In 2025 around 126,000 people visited – more than in any year since the opening.
