Turm der Sinne
Hands-on museum in a city wall tower at Nuremberg's Spittlertor, where you can explore sensory illusions and perception firsthand.
Over het museum
The idea arose in the mid-1990s within the Humanistische Vereinigung (Humanist Association) in Nuremberg, which was already using a tower in the western city wall for its youth work. A group of students, teachers, and researchers developed a concept for an interactive exhibition on the senses and perception, recruited scientific advisers, and founded a nonprofit operating company in 1997. Starting in 1998, annual symposia on brain research topics were held alongside the project.
With funding from the Zukunftsstiftung of Sparkasse Nürnberg and support from an exhibition builder, the medieval defensive tower on the Spittlertormauer was converted into a museum, which opened in March 2003. Since then, experiment stations spread across about 120 square meters on six narrow levels have invited visitors to experience optical, acoustic, and physical illusions for themselves and to understand their causes. For many years, perception psychologist Rainer Rosenzweig shaped the museum as its managing director.
Today the museum is run by philo science, the science brand of the Humanistisches Sozialwerk Bayern, which also includes the Disgusting Food Museum in Berlin and mobile museum boxes for daycare centers and schools. The tower is now only open regularly on weekends; during the week, school classes and groups can book it exclusively. As a non-state museum, it is funded largely through admissions, supporters, and donations.
