Deutsches Verpackungs-Museum

Museum of brand packaging and packaging design in a restored emergency church in Heidelberg's Old Town.

OpeningstijdenToegang vanaf € 8

Over het museum

The idea of a museum that takes packaging seriously as a cultural asset emerged in the early 1990s in a small circle of experts around packaging specialist Dieter Berndt. In 1993 the Förderverein Deutsches Verpackungs-Museum (friends' association) was founded, which still runs the museum today. After a lengthy search for a location, the members chose Heidelberg in 1995; art historian Hans-Georg Böcher developed the concept and became director.

In July 1997 the museum opened with the exhibition "Die Welt auf Reisen" (The World on the Move). It is somewhat hidden in the courtyard of Hauptstraße 22 in the heart of the Old Town, in an elaborately restored 19th-century Nothkirche (emergency church).

The focus is on branded products and their packaging: the collection shows how cans, boxes and bottles became advertising media and status symbols with the rise of branded goods around 1900, linking the history of design, consumption and everyday life up to the present. On display is packaging made of every material – from glass and tin to cardboard and plastic – as well as packaging machines and rarities.

Special exhibitions have covered topics including the Deutscher Werkbund, the Bauhaus and the New Typography in brand design. At the same time, the museum is a meeting place for the industry: it hosts the annual Deutscher Verpackungsdialog (German Packaging Dialogue) and presents the "Verpackung des Jahres" (Packaging of the Year) award. Numerous well-known brand manufacturers and packaging companies are members of the friends' association.
