Feuchtmayer Museum
Museum in the former workshop of the Baroque sculptor Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer in Salem-Mimmenhausen – on stucco, wood carving and Birnau.
Over het museum
The building in Mimmenhausen was constructed in 1691 and originally belonged to Salem Abbey. In 1730 it was acquired by the sculptor and stucco artist Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer (1696–1770), one of the most important artists of South German Baroque. Here he ran his workshop with several journeymen, producing figures of wood, stone and stucco for churches and palaces around Lake Constance – including the furnishings of the pilgrimage church of Birnau with the famous Honigschlecker (honey-licking cherub).
After Feuchtmayer's death, his journeyman Johann Georg Dirr and later Dirr's son-in-law Johann Georg Wieland continued the workshop until the early 19th century. Afterward the house was used for farming and fell increasingly into disrepair.
In 1990 the municipality of Salem bought the property and restored it with the support of the Denkmalstiftung Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg Monument Foundation) and a friends' association founded in 1994. The municipal library moved into the farm section, and the living quarters were prepared for the museum, which opened in June 2000.
The exhibition shows only a few originals but vividly explains Feuchtmayer's working methods: from drawing designs and the creation of a gilded putto head to the technique of stucco marble. One floor is devoted to his relationships with Salem Abbey and Birnau. The friends' association looks after the running of the museum and offers tours.
