frauen museum wiesbaden
Cultural history museum on women's lives, with goddess figures, women's history of the city, and art by women artists – currently on summer break.
Over het museum
The museum has its roots in the women's movement of the 1970s: sociologist Beatrixe Klein founded a women's center in Wiesbaden in 1975, and the museum grew out of its exhibition project on the lives of women in Wiesbaden. It opened on November 7, 1984, on Nerostraße and is still run today by the non-profit association Frauenwerkstatt Wiesbaden, with financial support from the city's cultural office.
Since 1991 the museum has been based in a listed rear building on Wörthstraße, built in 1884 during the city's southwestern expansion. On around 600 square meters across four floors, it presents changing exhibitions on art, cultural history, and city history from a female perspective.
The collection is divided into three areas. The archaeological collection originated with the 1993 exhibition “Die Sprache der Göttin” (The Language of the Goddess) and now comprises more than 400 figures of women and goddesses from the Stone Age to the present. It is complemented by a cultural history collection on the women's movement and women's history in the city, as well as works by contemporary women artists. In 1997 the museum received the City of Wiesbaden's culture prize, and in 2020 the state of Hesse named it Museum of the Month.
In 2026 the museum was temporarily closed for renovation work and then, from mid-June, for a summer break with no announced end date.
