Glasmuseum Steina
Volunteer-run specialist museum in Steina on forest glassmaking in the southern Harz in the 16th and 17th centuries, with free admission.
Over het museum
The Glasmuseum Steina goes back to an exhibition shown in 1993 on glassmaking and the history of the village's glassmakers. Because it was so well received, it was set up permanently from 1994; since then the museum has been run by the volunteer Förderverein Glasmuseum Steina (friends' association). It is housed in the former community center of Steina, a district of Bad Sachsa on the southern edge of the Harz.
Over the years the exhibition was rebuilt and expanded several times: redesigned on a larger scale for the first time in 2003, enlarged to its present size in 2007, and modernized in 2015, when a low-barrier concept was implemented. In 2024, further adaptations were made and a room for conferences and events was added.
The focus is on the era of the forest glassworks. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the forests, waters, and raw materials of the southern Harz offered good conditions for glassworks that produced bottles, drinking glasses, and other everyday wares. The exhibition "Die Gläserne Spur" (The Glass Trail) shows original finds, explains the path from raw material to finished glass, and tells of the life of the glassmakers; it also draws an arc to the long history of glass as a material, going back to antiquity. There are no glassblowing demonstrations – the museum sees itself as a regional history museum focused on the forest glass era.
