Gottlieb-Daimler-Gedächtnisstätte
Garden house in the Kurpark of Bad Cannstatt where Daimler and Maybach developed the high-speed gasoline engine from 1882; free admission.
Over het museum
After resigning as technical director of the Gasmotorenfabrik Deutz in 1882, Gottlieb Daimler bought a villa on Taubenheimstraße in Cannstatt. He had the greenhouse in the large garden extended with a brick annex and set up an experimental workshop in it; the garden paths were widened so that vehicles could be driven on them.
Here Daimler worked in strict secrecy with Wilhelm Maybach, who had followed him from Deutz, on a small, high-speed internal combustion engine that was to run on gasoline and be suitable for installation in all kinds of vehicles. The hammering at night made the gardener so suspicious that he tipped off the police about a supposed counterfeiting operation – but the officers found only tools and engine parts. In 1883 the first high-speed four-stroke engine was completed, and in 1885 the Reitwagen, the first motorcycle, was built here.
The garden house, largely preserved in its original state, now stands at the southern edge of the Kurpark and is maintained by Mercedes-Benz Classic as a small memorial. A workbench, tools and exhibits such as models of the first motorboat convey the workshop atmosphere of the automobile's pioneering years.
