Großherzoglich-Hessische Porzellansammlung
Princely collection of European faience and porcelain in the Baroque Prinz-Georg-Palais next to the Prinz-Georg-Garten in Darmstadt.
Over het museum
The collection goes back to Ernst Ludwig, the last Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine. After his accession in 1892, he had the ruling house's ceramic holdings, which until then had been spread across various palaces, brought together and housed in the Prinz-Georg-Palais. In 1908 he opened them to the public there as a museum.
In the 18th century the palace on the edge of the Herrngarten was the country residence of Prince Georg Wilhelm of Hesse-Darmstadt, who used the adjacent Prinz-Georg-Garten, still Baroque in character today, for informal festivities. The small “Porzellanschlösschen” (little porcelain palace) and the garden form a self-contained ensemble of courtly culture.
Despite later acquisitions, the collection has retained the character of a family possession that grew over time, shaped by the tastes of individual princes and their connections to other noble houses. One focus is faience and porcelain from the Kelsterbach manufactory, which was supported by the landgraves; Meissen, Höchst, Frankenthal, Nymphenburg, Vienna, Sèvres and St. Petersburg are also represented. With more than 4,000 objects, the museum offers an overview of European ceramics up to the end of the 19th century. Today it is managed as a branch by the Schlossmuseum Darmstadt e. V.
