Anniversary show in four halls that revisits the architecture exhibitions of 1901 to 1914 and juxtaposes original works from the Artists' Colony with contemporary design and art, complemented by color 3D reconstructions of the historic exhibitions.
Over het museum
The Institut Mathildenhöhe is the municipal cultural institution that looks after the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. It comprises the exhibition building with the Hochzeitsturm (Wedding Tower), the Museum Künstlerkolonie in the Ernst-Ludwig-Haus (separate entry), and the Städtische Kunstsammlung (municipal art collection) with works from Romanticism to the present. The Mathildenhöhe has been a place for presenting art ever since the Artists' Colony's first exhibition in 1901.
Joseph Maria Olbrich designed the exhibition building together with the Wedding Tower for the Artists' Colony's third exhibition, the Hessian State Exhibition of 1908. The complex rises above a municipal water reservoir and, with its five-fingered tower, defines the city's skyline. The hall of about 1,000 square meters was used for special exhibitions for decades.
After lengthy renovation, the building reopened in 2024; since then the institute has shown major temporary exhibitions there in four halls, usually related to the Artists' Colony, design, and architecture. In 2021 the Mathildenhöhe was inscribed on the World Heritage List. To mark the 125th anniversary of the first Artists' Colony exhibition, a show in 2026/27 links the four historic architecture exhibitions with current positions in art and design.
