Palitzsch-Museum
Municipal museum in the Palitzschhof in Dresden-Prohlis covering 7,000 years of local history, farmer-astronomer Palitzsch, and astronomy, with a planetarium.
Over het museum
The museum is based in the so-called Palitzschhof, a farmstead built in 1851 and the only surviving property of the old Prohlis village center. Since the 1970s it has been surrounded by the high-rises of a new housing development; of the former three-sided farmstead, only the two residential buildings remain.
In 1988 a local heritage room with a memorial to Johann George Palitzsch (1723–1788) opened here. The Prohlis farmer and amateur astronomer became famous across Europe in 1758 as the first person to rediscover the comet whose return Edmond Halley had predicted; he also promoted potato cultivation and corresponded with scholars throughout Europe.
After 1990 the City of Dresden took over the building, which today belongs to the Museen der Stadt Dresden (Dresden city museums) network. Following renovation from 2003 to 2005, the new permanent exhibition “Prohlis, Palitzsch und Planeten” opened in 2014.
It leads from Neolithic settlement traces and circular ditch enclosures to a re-created study of the scholar and on to today's comet research; the main attraction is a digital planetarium beneath a dome. The program is complemented by school programs, lectures, the Archäo-Pfad (archaeology trail) along the Geberbach stream, and an excavation project at the former Prohlis palace.
