In 1921 the Bohemian-born draftsman and illustrator Josef Hegenbarth (1884–1962) moved into the upper floor of a former winegrower's house on Calberlastraße in Loschwitz, built before 1839. He lived and worked here for around four decades; in the attic studio he created his illustrations for works of world literature as well as countless studies of animals and people. His guests included fellow Dresden artists such as Otto Dix and Hans Theo Richter.
After Hegenbarth's death, his widow Johanna began systematically cataloging his work, laying the foundation for the archive. In her will she left the house, the property and the estate to the Kupferstich-Kabinett (Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photographs) of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden – on condition that the holdings be researched and the house made accessible to the public.
After a renovation that restored the house to its 1920s appearance, it opened in 1998 as a monographic museum and research archive. The holdings comprise more than 13,700 drawings, prints and paintings, along with illustrated books, Hegenbarth's library and his written papers.
On the second floor, five rooms host changing exhibitions that put Hegenbarth in dialogue with his contemporaries and with artists of today. Above them are the largely originally furnished living and studio rooms, which can be seen on guided tours. Workshops, readings and art talks round out the program.
